Ghana – She Started Her Business From Home

Esther Agyei is the CEO of I do hair studio in Accra, Ghana. She started doing women’s hair professionally after school, working under someone for a year in 2014. In 2016, she decided to go solo and make hair styling her full-time job. Esther’s decision to enter the hair business stemmed from her inability to further her education, leading her to pursue a trade instead.

Initially, Esther faced challenges finding a suitable location for her salon as property owners demanded 2 to 5 years’ rent in advance, which was expensive. Consequently, she started her business from home in 2016 and operated there for three years until 2019 when she saved enough to rent a professional space for her clients.

At I do hair studio, Esther offers a range of services including braids, twists, full locks, weaves, wigs, and other hair-related styles. The time it takes to do dread locks varies from 1 to 5 hours depending on the type chosen by clients. Additionally, she provides home services at an extra cost and is willing to travel anywhere in Ghana.

During the COVID lockdown, Esther and her one staff member focused on home services only. Looking ahead, her future plan for I do hair studio involves opening more branches across Ghana to expand her business reach.
