Ghana – Why She Started Making Kombucha

Nana Owusu-Sekyere is the founder of Wholly Kombucha. She embarked on her journey into the world of probiotic drinks after witnessing the transformative effects it had on her niece’s severe skin condition. Traditional medications had proven ineffective, but when her family stumbled upon probiotics, her niece’s health began to improve. This sparked Nana’s interest, leading her to delve deeper into the subject.

As her family adopted kombucha into their lifestyle and experienced its health benefits firsthand, Nana began brewing her own batches for personal use. Soon, her friends noticed the positive changes in her skin and overall health and started requesting kombucha from her. Recognizing the growing demand, Nana consulted with her mother and made the decision to transition into full-scale commercial production.

Kombucha, a probiotic drink, nurtures beneficial bacteria in the body, thereby enhancing the immune system and promoting better digestion. Wholly Kombucha offers a diverse range of flavors, including mango, pineapple, bloom, bliss, lush, hibiscus ginger, and apple.

However, Nana encountered challenges in sourcing glass bottles locally, leading to the need for imports. While importing ensures high-quality packaging for Wholly Kombucha, it presents logistical and environmental challenges. To address this, the company instituted a bottle return program, allowing customers to return used bottles for recycling and receive a discount on their next purchase.

Nana is an advocate for female entrepreneurship, encouraging women not to be discouraged by obstacles but to persevere in pursuing their goals. Through her journey with Wholly Kombucha, she exemplifies the power of passion, perseverance, and innovation in building a successful business.
