Nyamuoch Girwath, a model and the founder of Principle Things, has carved a unique path in the modeling industry, overcoming challenges and empowering others along the way. Originally from South Sudan, Nyamuoch moved to America at a young age. Her journey into modeling began in Nebraska, where she grew up. Despite initial resistance from her mother, who prioritized education, Nyamuoch found herself drawn into the world of modeling through networking and mentorship.
Reflecting on her experience, Nyamuoch admits that modeling was not her initial passion. Instead, she saw it as a means to pay for school and support herself financially. Moving to New York at 19, she has now spent 24 years in the industry, gaining insights into its complexities and nuances.
One of the key challenges Nyamuoch faced in the modeling industry is discrimination. She highlights the lack of education about the industry, with many newcomers having unrealistic expectations shaped by media portrayals. The reality, she emphasizes, includes long working hours, lack of on-set protection, and the need to advocate for fair treatment and pay.
Handling discrimination professionally has been Nyamuoch’s approach. She emphasizes the importance of voicing concerns, knowing one’s point of contact, and working through agents to address issues effectively.
Nyamuoch’s rise in modeling coincided with a period known as the “white out,” where black models faced limited opportunities. Despite these obstacles, she has worked with prestigious brands like L’Oreal, Mac Cosmetics, Apple, and Target.
Beyond her modeling career, Nyamuoch is dedicated to empowering young models of color through Principle Things. This platform provides education, resources, mentorship, and guidance to navigate the industry’s challenges. Collaborating with models across Africa, America, and Europe, Nyamuoch’s vision is to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for aspiring models.
In the face of adversity, Nyamuoch Girwath’s journey exemplifies resilience, determination, and a commitment to positive change in the modeling industry.
