In an inspiring and deeply insightful conversation with Just4WomenAfrica, Dr. Nouran Farouk shared her remarkable journey from medicine to entrepreneurship and how she is transforming mobility for women across Egypt.
As the Co-Founder and CEO of Dosy, Egypt’s first female-only scooter ride-hailing platform, Dr. Nouran is not just building a startup she is reshaping how women move, work, and exist in public spaces.
“I Didn’t Just Want to Practice Medicine — I Wanted to Solve a Systemic Problem”
Speaking during her interview with Just4WomenAfrica, Dr. Nouran reflected on the moment that changed her path.
While studying medicine in Cairo, she and her sister struggled to find a female scooter instructor. There was no structured system, no digital platform, and no safe network connecting women to women trainers.
What began as a personal frustration quickly revealed a larger issue:
Women in Egypt lacked safe, accessible mobility options.
Instead of seeing it as a minor inconvenience, she saw a market gap.
Launching Dosy: “Take the Risk and Ride”
In 2019, after two years of research and preparation, she launched Dosy a name that means “take the risk and ride.”
During the Just4WomenAfrica interview, she explained:
“Dosy is not just about scooters. It’s about independence.”
The platform provides:
- Female-only scooter ride-hailing
- Training programs for women
- Income opportunities for female riders
- A safer transportation alternative
Today, Dosy operates in Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, and Mansoura with plans for expansion.
Challenging Culture and Building Confidence
When asked about the early challenges, Dr. Nouran told Just4WomenAfrica that cultural resistance was one of the biggest barriers.
Five years ago, women riding scooters publicly in Egypt was uncommon and often criticized.
But Dosy didn’t wait for society to change.
It created visibility.
To date, the company has trained over 8,000 women and provided work opportunities to more than 3,000 women.
What once seemed unusual is now increasingly normalized.
Funding with Purpose
In her conversation with Just4WomenAfrica, Dr. Nouran emphasized that choosing the right investors mattered more than just raising money.
Dosy secured grants and funding from institutions aligned with women’s empowerment and social impact ensuring that growth would not compromise mission.
The company is currently preparing for a new fundraising round to scale operations further.
Beyond Egypt: A Model for the Global South
Dr. Nouran believes Dosy’s model can work across Africa and other developing markets facing:
- Traffic congestion
- Public transport safety concerns
- Female unemployment
- Environmental challenges
Countries like Nigeria, Jordan, and India are on her radar for future expansion.
A Message to African Women
When asked what advice she has for African women considering bold career shifts, she told Just4WomenAfrica:
“You don’t need permission to build. If you see a problem, you can design the solution.”
Her story is not about leaving medicine.
It is about expanding impact.
Instead of treating individual patients, she chose to treat a structural problem — mobility.
Why This Story Matters
Dr. Nouran Farouk’s journey is a reminder that innovation often begins with personal experience.
Through Dosy, she is not only building a tech company she is building confidence, safety, income, and independence for thousands of women.
And as she shared with Just4WomenAfrica, this is just the beginning.
