USA – NKAYLA Hair Care Expands to Africa

For many African women, protective styles such as braids, twists, wigs and locs are more than beauty choices they are part of culture, identity and everyday life. But beneath those styles, many women quietly deal with scalp irritation, dryness, tension and thinning edges, often without products specifically designed to address their needs.

That reality is what inspired Nkayla to create NKAYLA Hair Care in 2017.

Born in Jamaica and now based in the United States, Nkayla grew up surrounded by women who expressed themselves through their hair. At the same time, she witnessed the discomfort many experienced after wearing protective styles tender scalps after braiding appointments, hairline thinning from tension, and dryness hidden underneath wigs and extensions.

What started as a personal struggle eventually became the foundation for a business focused on scalp health and textured hair care.

After years of research and product testing, Nkayla launched NKAYLA Hair Care with the goal of creating products specifically designed for women with textured hair. The brand focuses on scalp wellness, edge care and maintaining healthy hair while wearing protective styles.

In 2025, NKAYLA became officially trademarked in the United States, marking an important milestone in the company’s growth. One of its standout products, NKAYLA Scalp Therapy, was created to help soothe itchy, dry and sensitive scalps commonly associated with braids, twists, locs and wigs.

“Protective styles are beautiful, cultural and empowering,” Nkayla says. “But the scalp underneath needs care too. I wanted to create something that supports the woman beneath the style — her comfort, confidence and overall hair health.”

Now, the entrepreneur is preparing to introduce the brand to East Africa.

This May 2026, Nkayla will travel to Nairobi as part of NKAYLA’s expansion into the African market. During the visit, she plans to connect with salon owners, braiders, distributors and women interested in healthier scalp care solutions for textured hair.

For Nkayla, Africa represents far more than a business opportunity. She believes the continent sits at the center of global textured hair culture and innovation, making it a meaningful place for the next stage of the brand’s journey.

Her expansion also reflects a growing movement of Black women entrepreneurs creating products inspired by lived experiences and designed with the specific needs of Black women in mind.

As conversations around hair health continue to grow, Nkayla hopes her brand will encourage women to pay more attention not only to styling, but also to scalp care and long-term hair wellness.

From Jamaica to the United States and now Africa, Nkayla’s journey highlights how personal experiences can evolve into businesses that connect with women across different cultures and continents.
