In response to soaring global energy prices and worsening supply strains caused by the U.S.–Israeli war with Iran, international agencies are urging households, businesses, and governments to take steps to reduce oil consumption not just to save money but to stabilize global markets.
Why This Is Happening
Oil prices have surged sharply since the conflict began. The International Energy Agency (IEA), a major global energy watchdog, describes the situation as the most severe disruption to oil markets in history, driven by threats and actual interruptions to supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one‑fifth of the world’s crude passes.
With export routes constricted and production uncertain, the price of crude has climbed above $100 per barrel, and analysts warn it could go significantly higher if the conflict continues without resolution.
The IEA’s Recommendation: Reduce Demand Now
Rather than simply urging higher production, the IEA has recommended a set of demand‑side measures actions aimed at reducing how much oil the world uses while supply risks remain elevated. These include:
- Encouraging people to work from home where practical
- Avoiding unnecessary air travel
- Reducing vehicle speed limits and promoting carpooling
- Using public transport or cycling more
- Optimising industrial energy use to cut fuel requirements
The reasoning is simple: less travel equals less fuel burned, which in turn eases pressure on global oil supplies and prices, helping consumers and economies.
What Working From Home Actually Does
Studies before the conflict showed that remote work even a few days a week can meaningfully reduce transportation fuel use: avoiding daily commuting can cut hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil per day from demand.
This isn’t just a theoretical effect data from the COVID‑19 pandemic demonstrated large drops in gasoline and diesel consumption when widespread remote work reduced commuting and business travel.
