Nyamal Biel Tutdeal’s journey from Ethiopia to Sudan, and eventually to America, is a testament to resilience and the human spirit in the face of adversity. Born in Ethiopia, she experienced the upheaval of war at a young age, forcing her family to undertake a perilous journey on foot to South Sudan, enduring challenges such as inclement weather, bombings, and the threat of wild animals.
Resettling in America in 1996 brought its own set of challenges, compounded by the fact that Nyamal did not speak English, only Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia. However, her youth allowed her to adapt more easily to her new surroundings compared to an adult.
Despite the difficulties she faced, Nyamal remained determined to give back to her homeland. In 2009, she had the opportunity to return to Ethiopia with her grandmother. In 2019, through her foundation, she returned again to distribute over 250 reusable menstrual pads to a refugee camp, schools, and a prison in Gambela, Ethiopia.
Nyamal’s academic pursuits in conflict resolution reflect her desire to understand the root causes of conflict and contribute to its resolution. Her studies delve into the complexities of decision-making processes that impact future generations, underscoring her commitment to promoting peace and understanding.
Nyamal Biel Tutdeal’s story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of resilience, compassion, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world, despite the challenges one may face.
