Egypt are the new champions of African women’s volleyball after defeating hosts Kenya 3–0 in the final of the 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship in Nairobi.

In front of a packed crowd at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, Egypt produced a commanding performance to overcome the defending champions and reclaim the continental crown.

The Egyptians won the final in straight sets, 25–22, 25–15, 25–15, completing an unbeaten campaign and securing Africa’s direct qualification place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

A Dominant Tournament for Egypt

Egypt’s victory was not an isolated performance. The team had been one of the strongest sides throughout the championship, winning every match on their route to the final without dropping a set.

In the group stage, Egypt swept Burkina Faso, Senegal and Uganda.

Their dominance continued in the knockout rounds, where they defeated Burundi, Tunisia and Rwanda in straight sets before facing Kenya for the championship.

Against Rwanda in the semifinal, Egypt had to withstand a late challenge, eventually winning the third set 32–30 to secure their place in the final.

The final proved far more decisive.

Kenya’s Title Defence Comes to an End

Kenya entered the championship as defending champions and were hoping to celebrate another African title on home soil.

The Malkia Strikers had also enjoyed an impressive tournament. They reached the final unbeaten, defeating Zambia, Mali, Nigeria, Algeria and Cameroon on their way to the championship match.

But Egypt proved too strong.

Kenya stayed competitive during the opening set, but Egypt eventually took it 25–22. The visitors then raised their level considerably, controlling the second and third sets 25–15 and 25–15 to seal the championship.

For Kenya, the defeat ended their bid for an 11th African title and prevented them from retaining the trophy they won in 2023.

More Than a Championship Trophy

Egypt’s victory carries significance beyond the gold medal.

By winning the African championship, Egypt secured Africa’s direct qualification place for the women’s volleyball tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The top three teams also earned qualification for the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup.

That means Egypt and Kenya, as finalists, will be joined by Cameroon at the global tournament. Cameroon defeated Rwanda 3–0 in the bronze-medal match to claim Africa’s third World Cup qualification spot.

A Return to the Top for Egypt

The triumph represents a major return to the summit for Egyptian women’s volleyball.

Egypt’s previous African championship victories came in 1976, 1989 and 2003. The 2026 triumph therefore ends a 23-year wait for another continental title.

For a generation of Egyptian players, lifting the trophy in Nairobi represents the culmination of a long journey and puts the country back among Africa’s leading volleyball nations.

A Strong Championship for African Women’s Volleyball

The 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Championship also highlighted the growing depth of women’s volleyball across the continent.

Sixteen nations competed in Nairobi, with the championship serving not only as a battle for the continental title but also as an important qualification pathway toward the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games.

Egypt’s success, Kenya’s run to the final and Cameroon’s bronze-medal finish demonstrate the strength of the traditional powers, while teams such as Rwanda, Uganda, Ghana and others continue to contribute to the development of the sport.

For African women’s sport, these competitions are important not simply because of the medals, but because they provide athletes with opportunities to compete at the highest level and put women’s sporting talent in front of larger audiences.

Egypt’s Moment

After 23 years, Egypt have climbed back to the top of African women’s volleyball.

They arrived in Nairobi as one of the favourites.

They left as champions.

And with the 2028 Olympic Games now on their horizon, Egypt’s victory could mark the beginning of a new chapter for the country’s women’s volleyball programme.

For Kenya, the result will be painful. But their silver medal and qualification for the 2027 World Cup still represent a strong campaign.

For Egypt, however, Friday belonged entirely to them.

African champions. Olympic-bound. And back at the top.
