A Mother’s Diary: The Day I Realized My Children Were Watching

People often say that children listen to what we tell them. What I have learned as a mother is that children pay even more attention to what we do.

There was a time in my life when everything seemed to be falling apart. I was raising three children, trying to keep food on the table, paying bills, and worrying about the future. Some days, I felt overwhelmed and wondered if I was doing enough.

One particular evening stands out in my memory. I had just returned home after a long day. I was tired, frustrated, and worried about money. After putting the children to bed, I sat alone and cried quietly in the living room.

I thought I was alone.

The next morning, my youngest daughter came to me and said, “Mummy, when I grow up, I want to be strong like you.”

I was surprised. I asked her why.

She replied, “Because even when you’re sad, you still take care of us.”

Her words stayed with me.

At that moment, I realized that my children were watching me every day. They were watching how I treated people, how I handled challenges, how I responded to disappointment, and how I got back up when life knocked me down.

I had spent years worrying about whether I was giving them enough. Enough toys. Enough clothes. Enough opportunities.

But what they remembered most was something I never intended to teach them: resilience.

Motherhood is full of moments when we question ourselves. We wonder if we are making the right decisions. We compare ourselves to other mothers. We feel guilty when we fall short of our own expectations.

What I have learned is that perfection is not what our children need.

They need love.

They need consistency.

They need to know that when life becomes difficult, it is possible to keep moving forward.

Today, my children are older. They still remember things I have long forgotten. They remember the bedtime stories, the meals we shared, the encouragement I gave them before exams, and the times we laughed together despite our challenges.

As mothers, we often underestimate our influence.

We may not always have the perfect answers. We may not have endless resources. But every day, through our actions, we are teaching lessons that will stay with our children for a lifetime.

To every mother reading this: give yourself grace.

The days may feel long, and the challenges may seem endless, but your children are learning from your strength, your kindness, and your perseverance.

One day, they will look back and understand just how much you did for them.

And they will thank you for it.
