Philippa Pepera, the founder and CEO of Pippa’s Health Center, also known as Pippa’s Gym, has been at the forefront of Ghana’s fitness scene since 1996, making her company a stalwart in the industry for 28 years. Her journey began in 1989 when she returned to Ghana with a background in primary health care, initially working in the Ashanti Region.
The genesis of Pippa’s Gym stemmed from Philippa’s move to Accra, where she identified a niche market for a private gym. Her vision was not just about physical fitness but encompassed a holistic approach to wellness, including mental, physical, and spiritual health. This ethos led to the establishment of the gym, which quickly became a community-oriented space passionate about its members’ fitness journeys.
One of Philippa’s key challenges was funding. Traditional avenues like banks were skeptical until her family, including her husband, father, aunt, and brother, pooled resources to kickstart the project. Her father’s retirement fund became instrumental in bringing Pippa’s Gym to life in 1995.
Over the years, Philippa has navigated hurdles, including changing mindsets about fitness among indigenous communities. Her dedication to her mission and vision has been pivotal, ensuring her team aligns with the gym’s ethos, fostering growth.
Philippa’s Gym stands out not just for its comprehensive fitness offerings, including state-of-the-art equipment, but also for its community engagement. It houses the Mandy Fouracre Dance Academy, a taekwondo academy, and yoga classes. Beyond its walls, Philippa extends her expertise to help set up professional gyms across Ghana and the sub-Saharan region.
