Nigeria – Remembering Onyeka Onwenu: A Legendary Nigerian Icon

It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu. The iconic artist passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 72, after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos.

According to reports, Onwenu slumped after her performance at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. She was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island, as reported by The Guardian Newspaper. Her family has yet to confirm the tragic news.

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu began her illustrious music career in the 1980s. She released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981, marking the start of a prolific journey in the music industry. Among her numerous albums and singles, the hit song “One Love” stands out as a timeless classic.

Onwenu’s talents extended beyond music to the silver screen, where she acted in several Nollywood films. Her remarkable contributions to both music and film have earned her numerous awards and accolades, cementing her status as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music.

Beyond her entertainment career, Onyeka Onwenu was also an influential figure in politics and public service. In 2013, she was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. Later, in 2016, she became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development, demonstrating her dedication to societal development.

Her contributions to Nigerian society did not go unnoticed. In 2011, she was awarded the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). Additionally, she was recognized as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organizations.
