Frances Oboro is the CEO and Creative Director of Franuel Eco Furniture Ltd, a company that specializes in transforming eco-friendly materials into artistic furniture masterpieces. With a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Benin, Frances combines legal precision and artistic flair to create sustainable and stunning products.
Frances started her business in the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, a time when many businesses were shutting down. Her resilience and creativity allowed her to navigate the challenges and turn them into opportunities.
Despite her success, Frances occasionally faces skepticism. People often ask her if she actually makes the furniture herself, doubting her capabilities simply because she is a woman. However, she takes these doubts in stride and proves her skills through her exceptional work.
When asked by Just4WomenAfrica how she comes up with her designs, Frances said it comes naturally to her without much effort. Her innate creativity shines through in every piece she creates.
Frances believes the furniture business in Nigeria does support women. Many of her clients are men intrigued by the fact that a woman creates these eco-friendly pieces. Women also support her by purchasing her products, showing solidarity for women in business. Frances feels that being a woman gives her a unique edge in the competitive furniture market.
The major challenge Frances faces in scaling her business is the lack of a large working space. She misses out on large-scale contracts due to limited workspace and finds renting additional space prohibitively expensive. Currently, she operates from home to manage costs.
When asked what women should do to be taken seriously at investment meetings, Frances emphasized the importance of preparation. She advises women to have a well-prepared elevator pitch to make a strong impression.
Franuel Eco Furniture Ltd offers a range of products, including dining sets, mirrors, rugs, door mats, lamps, and more. Most raw materials are sourced locally in Nigeria, but some items, like seashells and rope, are imported due to their unavailability locally.
Currently, Frances has a staff strength of five and hopes to expand her team as her business grows. Her clients include homes, hotels, and recreation centers, all of which appreciate the eco-friendly and artistic touch of her furniture.
Eco-friendly furniture has numerous benefits for both the environment and consumers. By using sustainable materials, eco-friendly furniture helps reduce the depletion of natural resources. This approach minimizes the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing and transportation. Additionally, eco-friendly furniture often incorporates non-toxic materials, making it safer for consumers and their families. The longevity and durability of these pieces also mean they are a cost-effective investment, reducing the need for frequent replacements and thereby decreasing waste.
Frances Oboro’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and the importance of supporting women in business. Her story inspires many to pursue their passions and overcome the challenges they face. By championing eco-friendly practices, she not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also sets a powerful example for future entrepreneurs.
