Meet Chef Mollie Ahlstrand, an Italian chef with roots in Tigray, Ethiopia, now making waves in the culinary world from her base in America. Tigray, located in northern Ethiopia, borders Eritrea, the Amhara Region, the Afar Region, and Sudan, enriching Chef Mollie’s culinary repertoire with diverse influences.

Her journey into the culinary arts began with a serendipitous encounter in Rome. Initially bound for the University of California, Mollie’s path took a delicious detour when she stumbled upon a cooking school while exploring the streets of Rome. Captivated by the artistry and flavors emanating from the kitchen, she made a spontaneous decision to immerse herself in Italian cuisine, setting aside her university plans to learn the intricacies of Italian cooking firsthand.

Driven by passion and a desire to master the culinary craft, Chef Mollie devoted herself to honing her skills, eventually becoming one of the first black women to establish a restaurant in Santa Barbara, California, 27 years ago. Her dedication and talent have led her to cook for an array of high-profile personalities, including Presidents Obama and Biden, Oprah Winfrey, and Hollywood stars like Michael Douglas and Kirk Douglas.

When asked about her experience cooking for such esteemed guests, Chef Mollie’s humility and warmth shine through.
