Perpetue Mukamusinga is a trailblazer in the coffee industry, particularly in Rwanda, where she holds the distinction of being the first female barista. With over 12 years of experience, her journey exemplifies breaking stereotypes and championing gender equality in traditionally male-dominated sectors. In 2008, when Perpetue embarked on her career path, there were only seven baristas in the entire country, underscoring the rarity of her role at the time.
Motivated by the desire to challenge perceptions and showcase women’s strength and capability in the coffee industry, Perpetue became a barista. Her decision was not just about personal success but also about paving the way for other women to pursue similar opportunities. Through her dedication and passion for coffee, she has become a symbol of empowerment and inspiration for women not only in Rwanda but across Africa.
In 2021, Perpetue took her commitment a step further by establishing the Integrated Barista Training Center (IBTC), a consultancy and training facility aimed at equipping individuals for careers in the hospitality industry, particularly as baristas. IBTC’s mission goes beyond just providing technical skills; it also focuses on fostering inclusivity and empowering women. To date, IBTC has successfully trained over 270 graduates, with an impressive 102 of them being women.
Perpetue’s pride in her accomplishments as the first female barista is evident, but her true satisfaction lies in the hope that her journey will inspire countless other women to pursue their dreams fearlessly. By brewing Rwanda coffee, she not only showcases the country’s rich coffee heritage but also supports local farmers who employ traditional, manual harvesting methods.
Her message to women across Rwanda and Africa is one of encouragement and empowerment.
