Ghana – Building Sokolata into Ghana’s Premium Chocolate Brand

In 2021, Elom Acolatse launched Sokolata, a premium Ghanaian chocolate brand, while pursuing a Business Administration degree at Ashesi University. In an exclusive interview with Just4WomenAfrica, Elom shared her journey, challenges, and aspirations for the brand.

From Business Ideas to Sokolata

Before founding Sokolata, Elom ventured into different businesses, including smoothies, juices, and music. However, she felt these industries were too common and wanted to create something unique that represented Ghana and Africa on a global scale. She frequently told her sister she prayed for a business idea that would stand out, and chocolate became that vision.

The Chocolate-Making Process

Sokolata sources its cocoa from the Ghana Cocoa Board, ensuring high-quality, ethically sourced raw materials. The chocolate-making process follows these key steps:

  1. Fermentation & Drying – Enhancing the cocoa flavor naturally.
  2. Roasting – Bringing out the rich aroma and taste.
  3. Adding Ingredients – Blending cocoa with other natural flavors.
  4. Molding & Packaging – Crafting premium chocolate bars and packaging them for distribution.

Challenges of the Chocolate Industry in Ghana

Elom revealed that one of the biggest challenges has been the perception that imported chocolate is superior to locally made products. This mindset made it difficult to attract consumers initially. However, in recent years, there has been a growing appreciation for Ghanaian-made chocolates, leading to increased local patronage.

Target Market & Marketing Strategies

Sokolata caters to:

  • Chocolate lovers
  • Bakers
  • Food enthusiasts
  • Supporters of locally made products

Elom has successfully marketed Sokolata through social media, pop-up events, and chocolate brunches, helping to create brand awareness and drive sales.

Future Plans & International Expansion

Elom’s long-term vision for Sokolata includes:

  • Strengthening the brand in Ghana before expanding to other African markets and beyond.
  • Incorporating e-commerce to allow customers worldwide to easily purchase Sokolata chocolates.

Lessons in Entrepreneurship & Advice to African Women

As an entrepreneur, Elom has learned the importance of patience, understanding that businesses take time to grow. Her advice to African women is:

“Start small but think big. Don’t wait to have everything in place before you start.”

Ghana’s Chocolate Industry in Numbers

  • Ghana is the second-largest cocoa producer in the world, after Côte d’Ivoire.
  • The country produces over 800,000 metric tons of cocoa annually.
  • Local chocolate consumption is increasing by 20% annually, according to the Ghana Cocoa Board.

With Sokolata, Elom Acolatse is proving that Ghanaian-made chocolate can compete globally. Her journey is an inspiration to aspiring African entrepreneurs looking to make an impact in their industries.
