Pelumi Nubi made history as the first Black woman to travel by road from the UK to Lagos, Nigeria, in a one-liter car, completing the journey in 74 days. In an interview with Just4WomenAfrica, she shared her motivations and experiences during this groundbreaking trip.
When asked what inspired her to undertake such an ambitious journey, Pelumi emphasized the importance of representation. She wanted to be the first Black woman to make this trip and felt it was crucial to showcase Africa to the world. As an avid adventurer who has traveled to over 80 countries, she saw this trip as an opportunity to blend her love for travel with a significant cultural milestone.
Funding the trip was a major endeavor. Pelumi used her personal savings and secured one sponsor for the road trip. The journey required over a year of planning and saving, with an estimated cost of £20,000. This budget covered petrol, food, accommodation, and car repairs, especially after a crash that damaged her vehicle, affectionately named Lumi.

Choosing a one-liter car for the trip was a strategic decision. Pelumi explained that this car had been her reliable companion for the past five years, and its modest size helped her connect with people more easily along the way. Despite the challenges, this choice proved to be the best decision for her adventure.
Staying connected was vital for Pelumi during her journey. She ensured she had phone and internet access 90% of the time to keep people informed of her whereabouts and to call her mother daily. This connection was crucial for her safety and for maintaining communication with her loved ones.
Pelumi faced unexpected challenges on the road, including exhaustion, loneliness, and homesickness. She didn’t anticipate how physically and emotionally taxing the journey would be, particularly during her menstrual cycle. However, she was pleasantly surprised by the kindness and generosity of the people she met along the way.
Each country she traveled through offered unique experiences. Pelumi was particularly enchanted by the beaches in Senegal and the food in The Gambia. She appreciated the distinct beauty and culture that every country had to offer.
Discussing an accident she had during the trip, Pelumi noted that accidents are an inevitable risk of road travel. She cited factors such as driving late at night and inadequate car lights as potential causes. Despite the mishap, she was deeply grateful for the local community’s support, including emergency services and kind strangers who assisted her.
Arriving at the Nigerian border was a highly emotional moment for Pelumi. It felt like a national celebration, and she expressed her gratitude to the Lagos State government for the arrangements made to welcome her. This moment is one she will always cherish.
Pelumi’s car, Lumi, was donated to a museum in Lagos, Nigeria, to inspire others to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams. Pelumi Nubi’s historic journey is a testament to the power of determination, adventure, and the spirit of Africa. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.
