Cameroon – Bringing African Stories to Life: An Interview with Fleurie Leclercq

Fleurie Leclercq is a talented children’s book author with a unique story that spans continents. Born in Cameroon, she spent her early childhood being raised by her grandmother. At the age of 10, Fleurie moved to France to live with her mother, marking the beginning of a journey that would eventually take her to the United States. Now based in California, Fleurie is a self-published author who has written 10 children’s books since she began her writing career in 2018.

Fleurie told Just4WomenAfrica that her inspiration for writing children’s books comes from her desire to portray happy childhood experiences in Africa. She reflects on her own joyful upbringing, filled with love, curiosity, and learning about the world. Fleurie wanted to bring these stories to life in a way that celebrates African culture and traditions while also providing lessons and entertainment for children around the globe.

With vibrant characters and relatable themes, her books are written in English, French, and Spanish, allowing her to connect with a diverse audience. She explains that the inclusion of Spanish was influenced by her current location in California, where there is a large Spanish-speaking community. Looking ahead, she hopes to expand her work by translating her books into Portuguese and some African languages, further broadening their reach.

When asked which book she would recommend to new readers, Fleurie highlights “Mosi the Water Bearer.” This captivating story is about Mosi, a young boy living in an African village who reflects on the wisdom and legacy of his ancestors.
